Li Veli

Li Veli Winery & Bistro | Italian Winery & Bistro

Li Veli Winery & Bistro specialises in the Apulian cuisine of Southern Italy, and is a joint venture between the Falvofamily, owner of the Masseria Li Veli Winery in Puglia, and the Melpignano family, founder and owner of the San Domenico Hotels Group.

Following the success of the businesses in Puglia, the two families wished to introduce them to London, so they have created their own slice of Southern Italy in Covent Garden.

The team are proud to be serving authentic Pugliese dishes created by a team from San Domenico Hotels, accompanied by Li Veli’s very own, award-winning wines, in the traditional surroundings of Li Veli Winery & Bistro.

Two winemaking, hotel owning families running an Italian bistro in Covent Garden; Tom heads to Li Veli to see if experience makes for excellence… I’ve worked with a lot of chefs so far in my life.

Li Veli is a wine bar and bistro specialising in the food and wine of Puglia, the heel of Italy.

It was opened by two families; the Falvo family, owners of the Masseria Li Veli Winery in Puglia, and the Melpignano family who run San Domenico Hotels.

Wine from the Masseria Li Veli Winery covers the walls, everything is muted and white yet comfortable and homely almost.

Until my visit to Li Veli I knew very little about the food of Puglia, and even now after that meal and the encyclopedic waiting staff, I’m sure I have only scratched the surface.

Li Veli specialises in food from the Apulian region of Italy, and, especially, wine, with a wine list of very carefully chosen Apulian wines to complement the food served – many of them from their own Masseria Li Veli Winery in Puglia.

The menus are short, with just around eight starters and main courses, all carefully chosen to reflect Apulian cuisine, with – I was pleased to note – warm, rustic and comforting dishes heavy on elements such as cheese, tomatoes and meats.

There are no pictures, but, instead, quirky decorative touches on the white square pillars that separate the room into an eating area and bar area – bunches of keys down one pillar, and pairs of wine glasses down the other.

There is a more urban look here in the bar area, effected by the white “bricks”; the dark urban lettering spelling out “Li Veli” with bright lighting behind; and a functional shelf holding numerous bottles.

It was accompanied by another Li Veli wine – the Aleatio Passite 2008 – which was a dark brown colour with a red tint, and a nose of pure, plump sultanas.

Warm, busy atmosphere (without the waiting list of weeks), food that’s truly satisfying (not minimalist, not diner sized overload) and wine that’s authentic and interesting (sans the hefty price tag).

Authentically Apulian, Li Veli has the ideal date menu accompanied by their home grown wines and olive oil made in the family vineyard, we kid you not.

Whatever you do, save a little space for the pistachio dessert – clean, fresh and luxuriously light.

Ask the waiters to match glasses of wine to your dishes – you must do by the glass here, and sparkle it up for at least one of them.

Try to call ahead and request a table by the window, they’re the absolute best unless you’d rather sit at the bar and concentrate more on wines and snacks than a full meal.

New Apulian restaurant in Covent Garden serves up traditional Puglian produce, cooked the simple, Italian way.

Serving up traditional Apulian cuisine, the Li Veli family pride themselves on serving up traditional Italian cuisine, direct from their own vineyards and farmland in the Puglia region.

The wine takes centre stage as much as the food does – and the team at Li Veli can help guide through the menu with pairings from their own vineyard in Puglia.

Pair it with their signature digestif: a unique, honey-sweet Aleatico from Li Veli's winery, this rich amber coloured dessert Puglia wine lingers on the palate long after you've tasted it.

For lovers of authentic Italian food, the Li Veli winery and bistro channels the emphasis on fine dining done simply that makes Italian cuisine so unique.

A new bistro and wine bar on Long Acre, focusing on the food and drink from Puglia, southern Italy.

The food menu - served in the 36-cover dining room - features a range of traditional dishes from the region, complemented by a wine list dominated by bottles from the Li Veli winery over in Salento.

Those wines are available to buy from the in-house shop, too.
